Italy boss Cesare Prandelli got round to announcing his 30-man provisional World Cup squad yesterday, with whispers that veteran striker Alberto Gilardino was an outside bet for inclusion after an impressive season with Genoa in Serie A.

In fact, his club were so certain that Gilardino would be on the plane to Brazil that they went ahead and congratulated the 31-year-old frontman (along with team-mate Mattia Perin) for squeaking his way onto Prandelli’s long-list.

There was, however, just one small problem.

While goalkeeper Perin did get the nod, Gilardino didn’t – leaving Genoa’s premature congratulatory Tweet for the pair of them looking all the more awkward…

The Tweet was later deleted, but not before the internet had got their grubby paws on it!
