Brazil Soccer WCup US Germany

Despite picking up the big ‘L’, the US advanced through to the knock-out stages of the World Cup thanks to Portugal’s parting gift to them (a 2-1 victory over Ghana), with the little-fancied Yanks outdoing themselves to squeak into the latter stages.

However, it was funny old afternoon for Jermaine Jones (who we already know isn’t the sharpest sandwich at the picnic), with the be-dreadlocked midfielder put in a calamity-strewn shift in the middle of the park.

Exhibit A: Getting absolutely boshed to the ground by an utterly impervious referee…

Exhibit B: A ropey piece of mis-control sees Jones clumsily clonk the ball into his own face…

Exhibit C: Jones then somehow manages to knock himself sparko doolally by running head-first into teammate Alejandro Bedoya…

Poor lad. It was like watching a 90-minute long episode of You’ve Been Framed!

Three unfortunate events from this game. None of which were really his fault, except the poor touch that bounced off his own face (completed pass though so not really a failure).

Chris, you seem pretty bitter. Who do you support?

    Was this a fail?

No, all three his fault: avoid the ref, trap the ball like a professional player, and his teammate was getting to the ball clearly so it was on him not to do what he did. He did not have a great outing overall in any case.

    And bitter? Weird comment.

“thanks to Portugal’s parting gift” “outdoing themselves to squeak into the latter stages”

The U.S. team displayed so much grit and determination to EARN advancement out of one of the toughest groups in the tournament.

Jones had a tough game but it sounded bitter to me too.

yet, the failure that is Jermaine Jones is still in the WC, whilst footbal gods like Gerrard, Ronaldo, Ramos, Pirlo et al are on holiday…..funny

“whilst footbal gods like Gerrard, Ronaldo, Ramos, Pirlo et al are on holiday…..funny”

You didn’t just mention Gerrard in the same sentence as the rest, did you? Especially given his contribution to this tournament. I think Stevie G had his own little Jermaine Jones moment a month or so ago. Quite a bit more costly, though.

    @K

Yes,outdoing themselves…meaning they overachieved, which they did. Germany and Portgual were favourites to go through at the start,Ghana coming next. USA have been brilliant, but weren’t favourites to go through…so are outdoing themselves. No bitter whatsoever!

  10. Al says:

looked a tough group on paper but as it turned out was pretty weak Germany excluded. Portugal are a one man team and he was playing on one leg and Ghana were a bigger comedy show than monty python

  11. Alice says:

Sorry though Germany’s technics were really fab this time I was mainly concentrating on jones and what he’s going to do next xD
Everyone had a great time watching him here. Germany’s press is particularly fascinated by jones and his quirks xD
