Miguel Cardoso got his tenure as Celta Vigo’s new coach off to a flying start when he dropped a sizeable clanger in his introductory press conference.
A sin beyond sins, Cardoso accidentally confused Celta with their Galician rivals Deportivo la Coruna.
The Portuguese worked as an assistant at Deportivo in 2012/13 and obviously had that stint on the brain when he was welcomed as the successor to Antonio Mohamed at the Estadio Balaidos on Wednesday afternoon.

Addressing the assembled press, Cardoso said:
I want to thank the president and the sporting director for showing faith in me and my coaching staff to start a new era at Deportivo… I mean Celta.
According to the Telegraph, the unfortunate slip of the tongue apparently caused Celta sporting director Felipe Minambres, who was sat next to Cardoso, to visibly grimace.
Rough. Oh well, it’s all onwards and upwards from here, eh Miguel?
