No no no no. No.

“Ian Wright will be one of the voices of Absolute Radio’s football coverage when it begins broadcasting live Premier League games next month.

“Wright, who fronted the drivetime show on TalkSport, a rival commercial station, will host a 90-minute post-match analysis show on Absolute Radio at 5pm on Saturdays.

“Jim Proudfoot will commentate on the station’s live Saturday afternoon games, to be broadcast on its digital radio station Absolute Radio Extra as well as its national AM service and online.

“Russ Williams will present Rock & Roll Football, a combination of music and goals, on the main Absolute Radio digital station and on FM in London between 3pm and 5pm, as well as fronting a 90-minute build-up show on Absolute Radio Extra.”

Only one of these things sounds good, and that’s Proudfoot’s Saturday afternoon show. Proudfoot, who has worked for Talksport and ESPN, among others, is a first-rate commentator and I’m sure I’ll check out his show when it kicks off.

I will, of course, treat Wright’s ‘analysis’ (ho ho) show if it was a particularly virulant STD and therefore to be avoided with the widest of wide berths. When there are so many good football journalists out there, why pander to the lowest common denominator? Wright is truly an appalling broadcaster, as you’d think Absolute should know.

Grrrr. The man’s a joke without a punchline.

As for the ‘music and goals’ show, that also sounds like a car crash-in-waiting, or at least like something Alan Partridge would pitch to Tony Hayers.
