Yes, Akon. Oh dear. The rubbish pop star revealed as much in an interview with BBC Radio 1:
“I’ve been hired as musical director for the World Cup. I will be overseeing the World Cup anthem and music at the ceremonies and I’m off to South Africa this week for meetings.
“I love football so it’s a great honour. Chelsea is my team in the UK but I’ll support South Africa in the Cup.”
Ach, and he supports Chelsea. Typical of a man who has recently come into a shit load of money, no thanks to any special talent.
Why choose a Yank? Well, Akon is of Senegalese origin, so he does in fact tick the “African” box. Unfortunately, he also ticks the “Owns a diamond mine and doesn’t believe in blood diamonds” box. Which makes the first part redundant. And don’t even get me started on his music, which is mainstream dross of the worst kind.
