The Football League have confirmed that the Championship, League One and League Two play-off finals will go ahead as planned this bank holiday weekend despite the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb outside Wembley Stadium.

According to the BBC, the 50kg bomb dating from the early 1940s was found around 200 metres from the stadium.

Many homes and businesses in the vicinity have since been evacuated with the British Army stating the device poses a “genuine risk to life”.

The Army have now built a blast wall around the bomb and are planning to remove or safely detonate it if needs be.

A statement from the Football League read:

“Relevant authorities are currently working to defuse and remove a World War II Bomb in the vicinity of Wembley Stadium.

“The Football League is working closely with Wembley Stadium and anticipate the situation will be resolved today [Friday 22nd].

“The Football League Play-Off finals remain unaffected and there is no risk to the weekend’s fixtures as it stands.”

Talk about starting things with a bang. Southend, Wycombe, Preston, Swindon, Middlesbrough and Norwich City have all got a lot to live up to!
