Fulham 2-1 Sunderland – Premier League – 6th May 2012

Clint Dempsey has enjoyed a magnificent season with the Whites, and against Sunderland in the penultimate game of the season, the attacker bagged a superb free-kick goal to make it 17 Premier League goals in this campaign.

The unlikely figure of Phil Bardsley levelled the scores for Martin O’Neill’s misfiring Balck Cats on 34 minutes, only to see Belgian midfielder Moussa Dembelé score a minute later.

The west Londoners are now just one point below their best-ever Premier League haul of 53 points, with still one game to play. Sunderland stay in 11th but O’Neill will surely be concerned by his side’s rather limp end to the campaign.

Here in the States, soccer news media is lauding Dempsey’s goal as his 50th Premier League goal. They’re also saying that Dempsey is the first American player to accomplish that feat.

He would be the perfect strike partner for Van Persie at Arsenal next season – I hope he doesn’t choose Liverpool, that will be the end of him if he does
