Back in 2007, the Daily Mail’s website gazed into their crystal ball and lodged their prediction as to which promising youngsters would go on to make up the future England team…

england-2007

The results? A stonking 1/11, with nine of the Mail’s future XI having won precisely zero caps between them to date. Indeed, only one player (Walcott) currently plays regular Premier League football and one (Johnson) has retired from the game altogether.

Normally we wouldn’t be so sniffy about rubbish predictions as viewed in glorious 20-20 hindsight (Christ knows we’ve cocked up enough of our own over the years!) but it’s the Mail, so…y’know…sod ’em!

Ben Amos (Man Utd) – still at MUFC. Spent last session on loan at hull playing 17 league games. Has played 1 league game and 1 UCL game for United. Contracted until 2015. No caps.

Sam Hutchinson (Chelsea) – still contracted to Chelsea and currently on loan at Vitesse. 5 league appearances for Chelsea. Played 9 times for Forest on loan last year. No caps.

Micah Richards (City) – who knows what happened. Injuries I assume? Still at City obv. 13 caps.

Gavin Hoyte (Arsenal) – now at Dagenham and Redbridge. No caps.

Robbie Threlfall (Liverpool) – now at morecambe. No caps.

Dean Parrett (spurs) – now at Stevenage. No caps.

Michael Johnson (city) – famous downfall. Now pretty much retired. No caps.

James Henry (reading) – now at millwall (although at loan to wolves). No caps.

Theo Walcott (arsenal) – 36 caps.

Scott Sinclair (Chelsea) – had finally become successful at Swansea before stupidly signing for city. Currently on loan at WBA. Surprisingly no caps.

Jose Baxter (everton) – now at Sheffield utd. No caps.

Feel bad for Sam Hutchinson. So many injury problems. He even retired for a bit if I am not wrong.

You’re not wrong, he retired but realised that the degenerative knee problem was no longer causing pain while working at Chelsea taking training sessions. Still injury prone but there’s no doubting his ability.

Hasn’t Micah Richards played for England as well?Makes it 2/11 (still a terrible prediction)

  4. Pauly says:

Richards isn’t currently an England player though, so 1/11 is correct.

  5. dbm says:

Sinclair could have been a contender until he got lost in in the City shuffle.
