2010 World Cup Formbook: Is Bobby Zamora In Your England 23 For South Africa?
By Ollie Irish
So, Bobby Zamora. He used to be shit, now he’s not. Quite a transformation for the ex-Brighton and Spurs striker. Uncle Woy Hodgson seems to have got the best out of Row Z, but could Capello do the same?
I have been impressed not just by Zamora’s improved finishing, but also by his general play – he’s arguably the best hold-up man England has, even if Emile Heskey seemingly can do no wrong (even when he’s not playing for Villa), but I have doubts about his quality and composure at the very highest level; whereas Heskey is proven and should be very fresh after a light season. That said, I would like to see Zamora given a chance in one of England’s pre-World Cup friendlies. Who knows? He might turn out to be Geoff Hurst 2.0?
Is Fulham’s in-form target man good enough to make your England 23 for South Africa? You know what to do by now…

Couldn’t agree more – give him a lengthy run out in the friendlies to test his mettle.
If he performs well, then he’s on the plane ahead of Hesk and CC for me.
Ditto what Chris said. Zamora, Dawson and Adam Johnson need to be tested in the two friendlies, with at least Johnson on from the start. Zamora’s performances in Europe are strong evidence he has what it takes make the jump.
We need Zamora, he is on key form. He can also play that vital target man role that we so desperately need to supply Rooney.
In my books, the order should go
Rooney,
Zamora,
Crouch,
Heskey,
Bent.
if i’d be capello i’d pick up rooney, defoe, crouch, bent and zamora as strikers
heskey is a still a good player, but not good enogh for world cup squad i think.
