Non-league side Ashington AFC are currently having a mare in a very literal sense after finding several of their recent home games gate-crashed by a horse.

According to the Metro, no-one at the club quite knows who the nag belongs to, but it routinely makes its way down to their Portland Park home ground to watch the team in action by exploiting a gap in the fence around its field .

Having reportedly been spotted at a couple of previous games, the horse attended last weekend’s outing against Crook Town, and boy did he pick the right game to watch – as Ashington went on to rack up a thoroughly entertaining 7-3 victory.

Martin Bamforth, the fan responsible for taking the photo above, told local press that the horse was ‘the oddest thing he’d ever seen’, before adding that the official match attendance was announced during the latter stages of the game as “597 – plus a horse!”.

Let the footballing horse puns commence…

  1. Sherman the German says:

There’s an idiom in Germany: “einen vom Pferd erzählen” which should – literally translated – mean “to tell sb. sth. about a horse”. You guys in Britain say “to tell sb. a cock and bull story”, don’t you?

Anyway, I can’t believe no one brought that nag to the ground. And in case it lives near the side, anyone should know. Does it have to pay? With sugar cubes?

    • Chris says:

@Sherman: There’s a phrase around my neck of the woods: “Excuse me, I’ve got to go and see a man about a horse,” which loosely means: “I’m leaving now, but I’m not saying why”.

He’s got a bit of a long face considering his team won 7-3

Neigh chance of that happening anywhere else.

@Chris: Leaving for a short time or a while longer? I mean, can you use it before going to the lavatory?

This is my nephews 3 year old cob, his names johnny and he escapes everytime he hears the crowd chanting!

  9. Clusks says:

I’m from Ashington and the whole town is overrun with horses because of travelers breeding them and then just letting them loose when they’re bored of them! It’s honestly totally surreal to live there these days.

  10. Emma Murray says:

This horse is stabled well looked after not just let loose. He is gelded not a stallion, he was brought home that day for a bath due to a show he was attending that weekend and got loose,he does not live on a tether in a field and is a much loved part of the family,he has never been there before only this one occasion!!
