With the first 90 minutes of the game passing without a goal going in, it looked for all the world like Iran were going to hold on for a spirited draw (if not pip it themselves) but where there’s a Messi, there’s usually a way – and so it proved, as Argentina’s little totem nipped inside and curled a perfect shot past Iranian ‘keeper Alireza Haghighi to win in with seconds remaining…
That’s Argentina through to the last 16, where Ecuador or, more likely, Switzerland will lie in wait.
In other words, that’s Argentina through to the quarters.
