Retro GIF: The Assault On Lothar Matthaus That Saw Real Madrid’s Juanito Banned For Five Years, 1988

By Chris Wright

Back in 1988, when football was a man’s game, Real Madrid’s Juanito was (perhaps unsurprisingly) banned for five whole years for this brazen double-whammy, back-stamping, cheek-mashing assault on Bayern Munich’s Lothar Matthaus as the German midfielder lay pole-axed between the legs of the referee…

Yeesh.

Despite a career and talent overshadowed by acts of irrational aggression and lengthy bans (he was once suspended for two years for headbutting a referee who had the temerity to let an offside goal stand against Madrid), Juanito is still held up as an icon of the club’s ferocity at the Bernabeu – with the Madrid ultras chanting his name in the 7th minute of every home game following his death in a car accident in 1992.

  1. Dickie says:

    Why 7th minute Chris?

  2. Hmmm says:

Anyone else notice the guy right of screen who comes in and studs mattaus knee at the end there…

  3. Chris says:

@Dickie: I think it’s due to his original shirt number, but don’t quote me on that.

  4. Madjair says:

@ Hmmm: You’re right! Didn’t notice that the first six times!

  5. Alan Duffy says:

I once ballboyed a Limerick City v Real Madrid match in Dublin (1980 – I am old!) in which Juanito played, along with Uli Stielike and Laurie Cunningham.

I ended sitting on the Madrid bench for most of the game, beside the manager and players as I had been standing in their way, so they asked me to join them!

  6. Chris says:

    @Alan: That Sir, is brilliant!

  7. Rob says:

    Pepe’s mentor.

  8. Piesfanfromgermany says:

Wikipedia also says it’s because of his shirt number.

The guy in the background is great too. You can tell what he’s thinking. “Oh shit. Grab your leg and down and this might not end up as bad as…ok, he just raked his face…”

check out the other guy as well…maybe Madrid fans can also cheer for his number…and for Pepe’s, Arbeloa’s and Ramos’.

  13. Terry Sheddingham says:

But what happened to make two players want to attack Matthaus like that?

  14. Jason says:

nice dodge in the beginning tho

  15. dc says:

scumbag piece of shit… typical mandril behavior to chant the name of a player like that, too bad Pepe is still allowed to play

  16. blitzen says:

Who is that player in the back who watches Juanito stomping on Matthaus and then decides to have a little lie-down on the pitch?

  17. chris says:

it’s so bad, i almost dont know where the clip starts and where it ends!

    shocking.

  18. submarino says:

Typical Real player. No wonder there are still having people like Pepe,Ramos.

  19. Jimbo says:
