There you go, the wait is over. After teasing us by delaying the announcement until the day of the game, Stuart Pearce has just announced that Scott Parker is to captain England against Holland at Wembley tonight – which is, I think I’m right in saying, the first time a Tibetan Fox will have skippered the national side.

Parker’s appointment means, of course, that previous favourite Steven Gerrard has been overlooked which, rather than some apocalyptic world-ending snub on Pearce’s part, could be rooted in something as insignificant as the fact that Parker is set to start against the Dutch while Gerrard will begin on the bench.

Good choice? Bad choice? It matters little as it’s only a one-game jaunt as is, but a decent performance will definitely up Parker’s chances of snagging the armband for Euro 2012.
