A couple of days ago Switzerland as a nation voted (by a slim majority of 50.3%) to cap immigration quotas. We’re not really in a position to wade into the politics here, but it’s safe to say the results of the referendum has been ‘controversial’ to say the least, what with it playing fast and loose with the EU’s laws on freedom of movement and all.

Anyway, to illustrate his pro-immigration point, Mathias Bolton, who is the Senior Coordinator for Commerce at UNI Global Union, was prompted to produce the following graphic – illustrating just how threadbare the Swiss national side would be without immigrant players or players hailing from immigrant families…

As is abundantly obvious looking at the graphic, the Swiss side has played host to a slew of ‘non-Swiss’ players over recent years, with the likes of the Yakin brothers, Gelson Fernandes, Gokhan Inler, Xherdan Shaqiri, Patjim Kasami, Valon Behrami, Eren Derdiyok, Blaise N’Kufo and Granit Xhaka (and that’s to name but a few) all either being born overseas themselves or being born to parents who were born overseas.

Well done Switzerland! Exactly what they should be doing – but how is this any different from Brazillian players playing for Spain or Portugal, or Turkish players playing for Germany or extra-shit English players qualifying to play for Scotland or Ireland or Wales?! Tis a joke I tell you!

At least it’s kinda controlled in soccer, rugby is bananas. you have Botha’s and Tuilagi’s in European sides #globalization ?

  3. Bear says:

To the comments above – Amen! Former colonies sending their products of European settlement and hegemony to play in the land whose polity once controlled them? Ridiculous! Or former open border policies to bring in laborers now resulting in actual citizenship? Poppycock!

immigrants are those who are foreign and come for work.

If you’re born in switzerland but your parents are foreign, you’re still SWISS right? So it should include those very players .

  5. Jarren says:

I never really felt comfortable with the players who played for Northern Ireland yet were born & bred in England.

Fair play to them for playing for us, but I wonder if they’d have chosen to put on our shirt if they’d have been good enough to wear the English one.

    Same applies to Republic players.

Why isn’t Benaglio in the pic?

What foolishness – those empty silhouettes would be filled by Swiss men. Who knows, then they might actually achieve something. Would you be as willing to see a team like Cameroon only a third native Africans and the rest white Europeans and others? I didn’t think so…
