The FA today released the squad numbers for England ahead of the World Cup, which we wish would bloody hurry up and start! The numbers given out by Roy Hodgson to the various members of the 23 have thrown up a few rather interesting  questions re: the England coach’s thinking over his first choice 11.

If the Three Lions were to line out in the opening game of the tournament in Brazil according to the squad numbers, the side would be as follows…

Hart

Johnson – Jagielka – Cahill – Baines

Lampard – Gerrard – Wilshere

Rooney – Sturridge – Welbeck

With the exception of Frank Lampard (no. 8), who one doubts will start, that looks like a definite starting 11. Or maybe Hodgson is planning to start the Chelsea veteran after all? What do you think?

FAILING TO PREPARE IS PREPARING TO FAIL…HART~BAINES~JAGIELKA~CAHILL~JOHNSON ~LALLANA~GERRARD~BARKLEY~STERLING~ROONEY~STURRIDGE

Lallana in for Lampard, and that doesn’t look a bad team. Shame about Welbeck like.

    “coach’s”, not “coaches'”.

“England coaches’ thinking over his first choice 11”.

We’re used to seeing England line up 1 to 11 in friendlies and qualifiers, but when it comes to tournaments there’s always exceptions…

Just look at our opening game of the last Euros against France: 1,2,3,4,6,11,15,16,17,20,22

Only reason Lampard has 8 will be because of ‘Lampard 8’ shirt sales. In the same way that had Beckham made the 2010 squad, you just know he’d have been given the 7 shirt regardless of if he started or not.
