An artwork by Italian sculptor Maurizio Cattelan which lists every England football defeat between 1874 and 1998 has sold at auction for £425,000.

According to Art Daily, the sculpture was sold to an anonymous bidder at Sotheby’s on Tuesday morning via a French-speaking member of staff.

Beginning with a 2-1 loss against the Auld Enemy in 1874 and culminating with our braves boy’s 2-1 defeat against Romania at the 1998 World Cup, the large granite block (styled to look like the epitaph on a war memorial) was first exhibited in 1999.

Describing the piece in the catalogue notes, Cattelan said: “I guess it’s a piece which talks about pride, missed opportunities and death.”

We hope Mr Platini enjoys his purchase.

Seeing the pic of Gazza you used for this piece makes me misty-eyed. He really cared about playing for England (and in particular for Bobby Robson). No England player has that passion anymore

Believe Neville’s lunge was at Euro 2000 Chris. We lost to Romania at both though!
