In what surely must be unprecedented, Sporting Lisbon have been fined after their fans hurled a bag of beans at their opponent’s goalkeeper.

According to O Jogo, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have been stung after a packet of lupini beans were thrown in the direction of Maritimo ‘keeper Charles during the 2-2 draw between the two teams on Saturday.

For the uninitiated, lupinis are small, broad bean-like things, commonly pickled and eaten as a snack in Portugal…

The FPF disciplinary council have since decreed that the heinous legume attack warrants a fine of €765, which is around £650 in old money.

By ‘eck, them’s some expensive beans!
