30 – 7 = 23

Official confirmation received, finally. We now know the names of the 23 proud Englishmen who will go into battle for Fabio Capello at the 2010 World Cup finals:

GKs – Joe Hart, David James, Rob Green

DFs – Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Ledley King, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock

MFs – Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips

FWDs – Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney

Which means this lot can safely book their summer holidays:

AXED – Darren Bent, Leighton Baines, Theo Walcott, Adam Johnson, Tom Huddlestone, Michael Dawson, Scott Parker

It’s a pragmatic selection by a pragmatic manager, with Theo Walcott’s exclusion the biggest shock – though when you think about it, Walcott made it easy for Capello to drop him. Otherwise, it’s a fairly predictable 23. I would have liked to see Adam Johnson instead of SWP, but I understand why the latter was chosen. AJ is very inexperienced and without Walcott, SWP offers a bit more pace too. The downside? Ian Wright Wright Wright will be unbearable now.

What do you make of Capello’s final selection? Let’s have it…

  1. According to Sky and BBC, King is in and Dawson is axed ;)

  2. Jack says:

    yeah apparently king is in…

  3. trevor says:

Sorry capllo no world cup 4 England minus theo.

  4. robert says:

its a discrase bent should be in the squad come on usa!

  5. robert says:

no offence but “theo” is soooo so bad all he can do is run.

  6. syndex says:

put bluntly we’re screwed, our centre backs are paceless, our midfield aimless and below par and without rooney our attack comical without rooney. I think even algeria will fancy a pop at us.

  7. Raybuckluck says:

Another tournament, another meaningless Heskey selection. I’m almost used to it now… If his inclusion means Rooney can go wild and score 6, im all for it. But if he plays and just slows us down, I wouldnt mind seeing Fab off to Inter myself.

  8. Eboue says:

Heskey is bollox, Bent should be in that squad no doubt

  9. syndex says:

    relevent joke
Martin o’neil in the dressing room after an abject villa performance and someone has left a steaming turd on the floor of the dressing room, Mon shouts “who’s shit on the floor?”
Heskey pipes up “I am but I try really hard in the air.”

another relevent joke: Carragher, King, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock, wright-phillps and heskey all make the team for one of supposedly best teams in the world managed by one of the most astute managers in the world.

  10. Qube says:

Adam Johnson inexperienced? Indeed cap based but has anyone see him this past year even the 7 mins he got he shown some AJ magic!

  11. Podge says:

As a Villa fan I’m happy Warnock is in squad, but the fact he hasn’t got a game in the warm up makes no sense to me. Baines may not have done well in the games but the fact is capello felt he was good enough to start before warnock. Warnock must have trained well in the last 3 days.

  12. Michael says:

So who’s going to be right back? Jamie? That’s pretty risky, he’s very slow. I think Micah Richards is the best choice. Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson are better choices but I guess Don Fabio will realise that the hard way. The only goalkeeper who won’t fail is Joe Hart.

  13. Sim says:

    Re: Michael

    Aren’t you forgetting Glen Johnson?

  14. Michael says:

    LOL, right…
