USA star Landon Donovan is seemingly under the illusion that the current England World Cup squad has no discernable weaknesses – maybe he’s just being polite.

Anywho, the LA Galaxy forward does believe that the time he spent on-loan at Everton last season will provide him with valuable insight into the English style of play, insight that he may be able to put to good use when the two countries meet on Saturday in Group C’s opening game.

So said Donovan himself;

“In my opinion, England are one of the top teams in the world and top teams don’t have any weaknesses.

“It would be hard for me to point anywhere and find a weakness in their team but my experience at Everton was valuable in a lot of ways, for me personally and also in getting the chance to play against some of the players we will see on Saturday.

“It also gave me the ability to understand the way their league is, the way and style most teams play in their league.

“Those are all beneficial things to us, but will they have a huge impact on the game? Probably not, but having some comfort in that way will be helpful on Saturday.”

Landycakes has obviously never witnessed the Heskalump in ‘action’. He’s just one big, walking weakness.

  1. Ollie says:

Apart from the keepers, lack of depth in forwards and injured captain, he’s right.

  2. Grant says:

Stop it. Landon Donovan is not the captain of the United States. Carlos Bocanegra is. It’s really not that hard to look this information up. For the record, he’s also not the leading cap winner, as that is Cobi Jones.

  3. Ollie says:

Chris has been executed by Maradona’s firing squad, Grant. Changed now.

  4. Chris says:

@Grant: I thought that Bocanegra was captain (Landy vice-captain), but all the source material said otherwise – so I assumed I’d missed something.

Off to the knackers yard for me!

  5. Grant says:

Sorry, I didn’t mean to be a dick. It’s just really frustrating to see all of the very, very, basic mistakes made by Brits regarding the U.S. national team since Donovan’s move to Everton this year. It’s just unprofessional (disrespectful?) to get stuff like that wrong. You’d roll your eyes (at least) if some Yank blog referred to Wayne Rooney as the captain of England or David Beckham as England’s most capped player. That was all that I was trying to express.

  6. Chris says:

@Grant: No problem man. I’m glad someone knows what’s going on!

As I say, the wire story had a pic of Landy with the armband on and referred to him as ‘captain’, so I thought I may have missed something.

It’s just a hunch, but I think he knows damn well what England’s weaknesses are… one of them being how highly they regard themselves and lowly the US side. Probably just trying to feed overconfidence if you ask me.

  8. the cannon says:

landycakes is the leading scorer but not the caps leader. and he should be the captain. i love black mouth (bocanegra) but his form has slipped, he cant play center half anymore and as a left back he’s servicebale but my big fear is watching aaron lennon and glen johnson (b/c you know he’s getting his ass forward) skin him alive saturday

  9. the cannon says:

and if not landycakes as skipper. timmy (howard, gooch (onyewu), and deuce (dempsey) are also other viable options. black mouth just doesnt strike me as skipper material he’s no inspirational leader and his play doesnt warrant the argument for leading by example either
