Hannover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke commits suicide
Terrible news from Germany. Robert Enke has killed himself by jumping in front of a train. He was 32.
The body of the Hannover 96 keeper was found on the tracks on the outskirts of Hanover. His agent, Jorg Neblung, confirmed to German media that it was indeed suicide, as the police first suspected. Enke also left behind a suicide note.
According to the Guardian:
“Enke’s car was found near the scene, unlocked, with his wallet on the seat. The two train drivers reported seeing a man on the tracks and applied the brakes while travelling at about 100mph but could not stop in time, police reported.”
Enke’s troubled state of mind has been linked to the tragic death of his daughter Lara. She died in 2006 of a rare heart condition, aged two.
The whole of Germany has been rocked by this news, with national-team coach Oliver Bierhoff saying: “We are all shocked… we are lost for words.”
Devastating news and such a sad story. Our thoughts are with Enke’s family and friends.
(Incidentally, I notice that Goal.com has already published a feature on footballers’ suicides, which you may or may not want to read. In this case, I find the timing rather crass.)

Very sad story. Whole life ahead of him and he does something that fucking stupid. I would really like to know if he thought about how this would affect his wife and other child.
I used to watch Hannover 96 occasionaly when I was stationed in Hannover with the British Army from 1975 to 1977. Very sad news about Robert Enke. Hannover uber alles. A lovely city.

He was a brilliant GK in Benfica and i love to see him play every week here in Portugal. I follow his carreer until now, and i am very sad about this news.

I will never really understand suicide. But if he felt he no longer wanted to live; it is ultimately his decision.

I visited Hanover 96 last year when Portsmouth played Wolfsburg. It appeared to be a very good family club, They gave us a little tour of the stadium. This is very sad news for Hanover football club and the football world, our thoughts are with you.

I am roumanian fan at Hannover 96, and i am sad to dead at goalkepper Robert Enke.
Desperately sad story. A player who should have been gearing up for the pinnacle of his career by representing his country at the World Cup, but who ultimately couldn’t overcome his personal demons. A 6 year battle with depression coupled with the death of his 2 year old daughter in 2006 was just too much for him to bear any longer. Let us hope he has finally found some peace. RIP

Hallo Frau enke ich heiße David und bin 18 jahrealt und bin auch mit einen Herzfehler auf die weld gekomen und ich habe ihren man auch gekant arber nicht persönlich sondern im Fernsehn alls guter Natzional torwart es tut mir auch sehr leid das ihr mann sich das leben genomen hat und sich einfach for einen Regonal zug geworfen hat arber dar kanman nichtz machen wen ihr man solche schdarke Debresjonen hate ich habe gestern auch getrauert um ihren mann und war auch sehr traurich darüber ich wünsche ihnen noch fiel gesund heit und ihrem kind.
