jabulani ball

Here she is folks – the official match ball for the 2010 World Cup, aka the Adidas Jabulani (Jabulani means ‘to celebrate’ in the native South African isuZulu dialect, fact fans).

The official unveiling of the ball will take place today, during the draw for the World Cup.

Adidas claim it’s the roundest ball ever, as they always do. As long as it’s not a fly-away beach ball, I’m sure it’ll be just fine.

As for the design, it’s no instant classic but I like its relative simplicity – so much stuff is overdesigned these days. 7/10 from me.

What do you think, peeps?

“I’d give that ball a good kicking for 90 minutes and no mistake. That’s what’s going to happen. Och, we’re not in the World Cup are we? Tits.”

I doubt I’ll ever see a World Cup ball better than 2002’s. Instant playground classic, most thieved football in my school’s history. Not that they have a documented history of stolen balls…

  2. Philando Torres says:

I forgot to give it a rating. 5/10. Not into the Spirograph design.

  3. Chringle says:

Wonder how long it’ll be before the tournaments first “these new balls move in the air too much” after a goalkeeping howler.

  4. peterfigwall says:

1/10…its the worst ball of all time

  5. Chris Fermi says:

Well – it’s ligher than the Teamgeist from the previous tournament only by a few grams though. dimples may help aerodynamics, but I thin they’re just for more connection on players’ feet.

I still love the classic Mitre Delta Premier League.

  6. Duke says:

@Chringle: My thought exactly. I’ll bet it won’t be long before someone starts bitching about it.

  7. Joe says:

The last good ball was at the last good world cup: France 1998. The rounder the balls have gotten, the crappier the games have become.

or8, all cockas. the new world cup baall is absolutly fantastic. i have bought the ball and when you play with it, it is very light. also the ball curls very easy and is the worlds roundest ball. The keepers will have somne real trouble with the ball as sometimes the ball dips or curls away at the last minute so there will be plenty of amazing goals in the world cup next year. Peterfigwall, what have you done to rate the ball 1/10? i bet all you did was look at it so try playing with it. you will soon up your rating on this ball….. JABULANI FTW.

  12. Alex says:

WOW! I love the forward thinking in a ball without corners, THIS ONE IS ROUND U KNOW! The roundest EVER

  13. ballache says:

if you ever played football you’d know that the rounder the better, every ball has a sweet spot:- even the new nike t90s which they claim dont- instead of a sweet spot the t90 has a sweet side where its heavier- where the valve is- this all depends where you got the ball as most sport shops get the “rejects” and if you want the roundest one direct its about 5 times the price.
That teamgeist one was rubbish- like kicking a cushion, it was light but it had a thick casing and it deadened your control, no valve assisted free kicks.
cant wait to have go with this one, the graphic designs rubbish but that doesnt matter so long as you can see the spin to get the feel of the ball. the best ball design ive seen is the new premiership charity ball. stripes and spots like the old checkered ones you could see the spin better.
its got footshaped panels that look interesting and it doesnt try to strain the seams like the teamshite and fall apart like the ones ive had did.
the t90 takes some beating though even the not quite round ones are better than the f50 from adidas i had last it was like an egg.

  14. ballache says:

mitres are heavy, and they have to be too hard otherwise they arent round, they have nodules like the michelin man and they suck trousers.

  15. ballache says:

world cup ball is always getting lighter though- makes it more exciting like a 99p floater. weird curling shots using the breeze like you can only do with a t90 on the right day.

  16. ballache says:

    u cockend

And Sony is the Official Partner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

  18. arty says:

some people thought this ball has many features. but i didn’t seen it

  19. Rush says:

What an ugly beachball. We will see loads of free kicks booted over the bar by miles again. Bring back the heavier size 5 black and white ball from the 1970 and 1974 world cup. Want to see skillfull football proper? Make the balls heavier again! What idiots design these new balloons? Morons! I wouldnt take one home for free.

  20. Zac says:

I’m impressed that it’s rounder than 2006’s Teamgeist, as that looked pretty round to me! There’s an article here which explores the ultra-roundness of the Jabulani:

  21. John says:

Why didn’t FIFA use an African made ball in the World Cup? Apparently top quality balls are made in Kenya and Zambia a company called Alive & Kicking. Would have added to the economic legacy in Africa too – which is lacking from this tournament

  22. Jabulani doesn’t mean “To celebrate”,Jabulani means “Unification”.

  23. just want to know about the new ball use in the world cup 2010 everything about it.

  24. just want to know about the new ball use in the world cup 2010 everything about it, because must goalkeepers are making error? thank.
