Yes, you are seeing this correctly. During the Ivory Coast’s 2-1 win over Togo at the AfCoN yesterday (which was settled by this delightful Gervinho volley), Didier Zokora took to the field with ‘maestro’ on the back of his shirt…

We have literally no idea what it’s all about (nickname?), other than Zokora may have just taken the job as conductor for the New York Policeman’s Benevolent Association Orchestra…

Either way, as Jerry said, it’s a bit silly.

  1. Özgür Kurtoglu says:

It’s a nickname, he’s had it for years and years. I don’t really see a problem with it.

  2. Vasko says:

If you don’t know that’s his nickname, then he looks like a bit of a prick. But it’s good that’s been cleared up.

  3. nobetta says:

he’s had this nickname since he played at the youth academy at ASEC Mimosas in Ivory Coast where he won the African equivalent of the Champions League. he is known as Maestro all across Africa, just not in Europe. as Mr Kurtoglu said, there is no arrogance or problem here. it’s nickname that was given to him and earned because, in his youth, he was nothing less than the Maestro of the ASEC Mimosas midfield and entire team.

  4. Cosa says:

It may be a nickname, but maestro implies that he is something he is not, a great player

  5. Hubo says:

His new nickname is now officially ‘Bob Cobb’.

I just recently got to meet the whole team. Great group of guys so down to earth. Zoroka is a Sweetheart gave me and my kids and my friends tickets to their game on 8/25/13 Scott Coast against Mexico. In the there days that stayed in the same hotel they were nothing but sweet and very respectful young men. Happy to say that it was an experience of a life time for me and my kids and friends. I Love.Zokora and the boys!! We Love Ivory Coast!!;-)
