It would appear that Rafael van der Vaart reaped the benefits of one of the cushiest contract clauses ever devised during his brief and largely forgettable stint at Real Betis.
As per the latest round of Football Leaks, the Dutch midfielder was contractually obliged to receive 14 monthly payments of €114,429 in return for not wearing red boots on the pitch.
Indeed, Betis were reportedly so keen to prevent their marquee signing from wearing any kit bearing the colour of their cross-city rivals Sevilla that they felt the need to offer a cash incentive.
So, all in all, Van der Vaart earned himself €1,602,006 for simply steering clear of red boots while making a grand total of just two senior starts in the 13 months he spent at Betis.
Money well spent, we’re sure you’d agree?
