Real Madrid Win 32nd La Liga Title, Send Records Tumbling In Process (Photos & Highlights)

“Toss me, but don’t tell the Elves!”

Mission accomplished: It’s been pretty much done and dusted for a week or two now, but Real Madrid assured their 32nd La Liga title and their first in four years with a win over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames last night.

With Barcelona having beaten Malaga 4-1 in the earlier kick-off (with Lionel Messi surpassing Gerd Muller’s European record by scoring his 66th, 67th and 68th goals of the season), Real Madrid new a win would do it, and win they jolly well did – Gonzalo Higuian, Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo all netting in a fairly routine 3-0 victory over ten-man Bilbao.

Madrid now have an unassailable seven-point lead over Barca with just two league fixture remaining, meaning Jose Mourinho can now boast seven top-flight league titles in four different countries.

Mourinho’s side have also shattered the La Liga scoring record this term, racking up 115 goals so far (record was 107) and conceding only 30 – also becoming the first team to boast three players reaching the 20-league goal mark in a single season; Ronaldo (44), Higuain (22) and Karim Benzema (20).

Mou got the Pep treatment after the final whistle…

While we’re talking records, if Madrid  – who have only lost twice all season – win their final two games they’ll also reach 100 points, surpassing Barcelona’s previous record of 99 set in 2009/10.

Which, you don’t need me to tell you, is completely absurd.

Oh, and Madrid’s 32nd title? That’s a record too.

Goals and points totals like that opens up the debate as to whether the Spanish league is poor, yes Barca and Real are two amazing teams and the other spanish sides have done well in Europe this season but would they honestly get that many goals and points in the Premier legues? I don’t mean it in a “can they do it on a cold night at the Brittania” kind of way, more that the lower to mid table Premier league teams are more solid? I just couldn’t imagine them regularly banging in 4 and 5 in England, any thoughts?

It’s like Rangers and Celtic all over again eh. No one else will ever have chance of catching them with their unfair TV revenues. Unless a billionaire buys a club. Madrid +85 goal difference, Barca +81 and 3rd, 4th and 5th are Valencia (+15), Malaga (+1) and Levante (2).

They’re probably the 2 best teams in the world but surely there wouldn’t be that big a gap if they were playing in England or maybe Italy – they might not even win the league if they were. Imagine if they had to play Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City and Utd twice a season in the league, they wouldn’t win all of them.

Bayern have beaten Madrid, and Chelsea beaten Barca and they’re 6th and 2nd in their respective leagues. So yeah, surely La Liga is quite a weak league, although saying that 3 out 4 teams in the UEFA cup semis were Spanish. You know what, I just don’t know.

La liga is the best .look at the performance of atletico bilbao in europa

Bilbao basically destroyed United too guys and they are not even in the top 4 in Spain. You could also blame the Clasico being in the middle of the semifinals for them not making the final. If you saw the Bayern MAdrid game the Madrid players were flat out fatigued in overtime while the Bayern players played fresher from being rested over the weekend.

Barcelona even performs a more attractive and cohesive ‘manager toss’ than Real.

Anyone know why Ronnie is so mad at that guy?

    I was thinking the same

ronaldo got pissed off because martinez told him not to make gestures towards the crowd, and also to celebrate over in madrid not there, then he called him a son of a b*&^%h! and ronaldo decided to respond in the best mature sportman like conduct he could think of!lol

@Plops: You’re argument makes a lot of sense. Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City and Utd twice a season makes 10 tough games from 38. Real Madrid only lost 2 games this season and Barca only 3. Would they manage 7/8 wins out of 10 from that kind of opposition? I don’t think so.

Premier League is still the best league in the world because power distribution is more balanced than La Liga. Being a Madridista or Cule and almost certain of your team winning all the time is all well and good. But the real thrill of football comes from being on the edge of your seat for 90 minutes wondering which way it’s gonna go.
