A Lionel Messi penalty was enough to see Barcelona pip Espanyol in the big derby clash on Saturday, but it was the Espanyol supporters who won the encounter that really matters – for, high in the stands at the Cornella, was unfurled a really rather good banner welcoming fans of their opponents to the city for the first time…

We’re entirely sure it doesn’t need any explanation but, safe to say, Espanyol fans hold Barcelonacorp Inc. and their global hordes of fair-weather, glory-suckling “tourist” fans in the same level of regard as most minor football clubs hold their big, brash, more successful local rivals.

Now I know where Manchester City fans get their small club mentality from…

  2. Joe says:

Except there was a point to the Man City fans banner, what with them being the only club in the City of Manchester, as opposed to United, who are based in Trafford, Greater Manchester.
This parody should be left alone until New York City F.C. play the New York (New Jersey) Red Bulls.

  3. joe says:

@other Joe: I think you’ve completely missed the point there mate. The Espanyol fans are mocking the large number of German/Chinese/Dutch/British tourists who come over to watch Barca and even wear the kit.

  4. Bestie says:

Cute banner, but Espanyol fans should wonder why nobody wants to watch THEM play

They are right. I live in Barcelona and that’s the reality. Also if you go out in Barcelona with an Espanyol shirt everyone looks at you like you’re an alien.

  6. ivan de la pena says:

you can’t compare the espanyol vs. barca match to other derbys. it’s espanyol representing spain and barca representing catalonia. that’s why people look at you like you are an alien wearing a jersey of espanyol in barcelona.

  7. Maria says:

There’s a reason Espanyol is thus called. They are the Spanish team in the city. ‘ FC Barcelona’ was founded by immigrants.

  9. joe says:

@Maria: But Espanyol are popular with ‘immigrants’ from the rest of Spain. FC Barcelona is stridently Catalan.

  10. Ramon says:

Barcelona are the Catalan club which makes them the locals. Espanyol are a Spanish club in Catalonia making them the foreigners.

A group of us arrive in Barcelona on Sunday, 27th April at 10:40 and want to go to the Espanyol v Almeria game but it is a 12:00 kick off.

We are prepared to go straight to the ground from the airport to save time – what is the best way to do this?

All of us will have travel bags so can you get into the ground with your luggage?

    Many thanks!
