Spanish Minnows Eibar Buy Barcelona’s Unused Title Confetti To Celebrate Their Own Promotion To The Top Flight

By Chris Wright

Relative minnows SD Eibar are currently in the process of saving up to fund a concerted crack at Spain’s top flight next season after winning the Segunda Division by a single point.

Following two remarkable successive promotions from the lower reaches of Spanish football, Eibar are currently too small to technically be allowed to play in La Liga next season as the league requires all Primera Division sides to have a minimum capital of €2 million.

Eibar’s currently stands at €400,00 though they are planning a fund-raising campaign and shares sale to rectify the situation.

Indeed, in an effort to reserve funds for little luxuries like improved player wages and new signings, Eibar decided not to shell out on fancy, brand new confetti to hurl about at their promotion party and instead opted to buy second-hand.

Realising that Barcelona had bought lots of red/blue confetti in preparation for winning the Liga title on the last weekend of the season before losing out to Atletico Madrid, Eibar contacted the Catalan giants and struck a deal to buy all of their unwanted confetti.

Barca were unable to keep hold of the confetti for future use as, as anyone with a working knowledge of confetti already knows, it tends to clump together if stored for too long. Confetti must be fresh.

According to ABC.es, Eibar will now use Barca’s cast-off confetti at their promotion party on Saturday.

How sweet! Pies have just found our new favourite Spanish team.

They should look to kickstarter, if it can finance some of the shit that it has done Im sure these guys could get their cash no problem.

Totally agree – Kickstarter would get it done for them. Make a nice little video package, tour the (tiny) grounds and talk about the big teams coming there and what it would mean to the struggling town. Send people a jersey as the perk for a €50 or €75 donation. The hipsters would go nuts for it.

I’m so into this idea I’ve spent all morning wondering how to get in touch with the club and pitch it, even though I don’t speak Spanish and I’m not a filmmaker. Spanish speaking filmmaker football hipsters, RUN WITH THIS.

  2. Seán says:

They havent won the league yet, only guaranteed promotion! And Super Depor will do the same tomorrow ;-) FORZA DEPOR!

  3. Duncan Nicol says:

I’m surprised that with a ground capacity of just over 5,000 that they will be allowed into the top flight

  4. Richard says:

They are already selling shares in the club, google ‘defiendealeibar’ they have a site set up to raise the money and are over half way there.

I love the thought that a well-run, proper community football team (ie. not the PLC football or rich mens’s hobby football which is now the reality of the game) will get to play in La Liga next season if a few proper football fans around the world help them out. I’ve dug into my pocket for 50 euros and I have to believe that there are another 33,399 fans who feel the same around the world. Anyone else want to join me at their next AGM?
