We didn’t stumble across many (the Newcastle University/Sports Direct prank being an exception) and it didn’t seem to be a bumper year, but we’ve still managed to cobble together our five favourite footballing April Fools japes from yesterday.

Let’s start where we mean to begin…

5. LA Galaxy to build new stadium in the middle of the 405-10 Interchange

It was announced yesterday that Los Angeles’ mayor had rubber stamped a plan to build Galaxy’s new stadium smack dab in the middle of the 405-10 Interchange, i.e, La La Land’s answer to Spaghetti Junction and what LA Weekly call “the most congested confluence of freeways in the western hemisphere”…

4. Roman Abramovich to manage Chelsea

The wags over at TalkSPORT released a Sky Sports News-style ‘breaking news’ clip in which it was claimed that Roman had finally bitten the bullet and decided to manage Chelsea himself, announcing that he was going to take over from interim Rafa Benitez at the end of the season…

Fed up of being repeatedly snubbed by England, Southampton’s top scorer made himself available for selection by the New Zealand national side due to his Kiwi grandfather…

To celebrate their “125th anniversary”, Football Manager announced they were releasing a special 1888 spin-off version of the PC game, complete with only 12 inaugural clubs to chose from, no substitutions, no offside rule and the danger of losing players to National Service…
