Germany Hannover World Cup East Germany vs Brazil

Not only was Rivelino the proud proprieter of football’s most handsome moustaches, he also did a mean line in coruscating free-kicks – with his dead-eye, through-the-wall set-piece belter against East Germany during the second round of the 1974 World Cup in West Germany being a perfect example of his silken prowess…

Jairzinho with the crafty assist there!

Granted, we don’t actually have many pertinent photos of Rivelino from 1974 so you’ll have to make do with this one of him and Brazil teammate Marco Antonio making snowballs at their ’74 World Cup training camp in Herzogenhorn, Switzerland…

pfff…, that makes Germany conceding 4 goals, without scoring any! that’s sad… :°-(

and Brazil scoring four times, without conceding any… as they are the top of the world, it’s fine!!

way behind Germany come Argentina, Mexico, and Belgium – each conceding 2 goals, but scoring at least once: Argentina 2, Mexico 1, Belgium 1.

so! there must be any great world cup goal scored by Germany. and here’s a list of ten “Deutschlands schönste WM-Tore – Beautiful Goals In German World Cup History” [@youtube] … ahem… not that…
well, I prefer the 10th (first in the clip) by Friedrich against Argentina and the 1st (last in the clip) by Matthäus against Yugoslavia.

anyway, this goal should confuse the statistics a little bit “DDR siegt auf dem grünen Rasen” [@youtube]. it’s the only match where Germany played against itself in the world cup and beat itself with only one goal.

Great playa and wat a team….they still shine today, the gift that keeps on giving.
