Pies grades England’s squad, and its manager, after an abject World Cup campaign:

David James - Replaced hapless Rob Green and looked much more solid. Didn't exactly enhance his rep in South Africa - he might have done a bit better for a couple of Germany's goals - but he did keep a couple of clean sheets before that, albeit against poor sides in Algeria and Slovenia.

Agree/disagree with our grades? Let’s be havin’ you then…

  1. Cole says:

In Carragher’s defence he’s not really up to domestic football these days either ;)

  2. Martin O'Neill says:

C- is very generous to Lennon, if Heskey is getting a D. Heskey did what was asked of him for 2 games and got dropped for is troubles. It wasn’t until I read this I realised that Lennon had played a game

  3. […] Rooney, England – As I said in England’s World Cup reports, Rooney has been the undoubted flop of the tournament, scoring no goals and looking way below his […]

  4. Davy says:

So what score would you give Howard Webb for his refereeing? The boys done/doing well

  5. Chris says:

I agree with Davy, it seems weird enjoying Webb doing well, especially as i remember revelling in the horror show that Graham Poll had in the last world cup, and that linesman has made some terrific calls as well.

  6. Phil says:

Was hating Capello for taking Heskey but…. Heskey was easily England’s best player. But he was still pretty useless.

Gerrard got too high a rating for me. Useless and expected to be a star.

  7. yank says:

cashley? best player of the tournament?

  8. Deckard says:

Rooney def one of the biggest flops of the tournament. Gotta laugh at some folks on various forums and blogs who’re still defending him. I think SAF had a right to use Roon if he was only slightly up to it. SAF’s greedy and didn’t wanna lose the title. Was rushed to play vs Bayern Munich, for obvious reasons, but it didn’t matter in the end. Forgettable year for Roon. Maybe he’ll get his sweet revenge in 4 years time when he’s 28.

  9. chris says:

Rooney was hopeless and John Terry played like a 10 year old against Germany. I have never seen an international defender so out of position so often.
And when postman pat brought on Emile Heskey to get us back in it I could only laugh it was so ridiculous

  10. David Macbeth says:

Cant argue too much but Defoe is a bit high and i think C- for Capello is generous. For supposedly one of the best tacticians in the game he looked inept and completey out of his depth throughout the tournament. Got his tactics wrong in 3 of 4 games. Not what you would expect for £6m a year.

  11. Russ says:

Can’t see how James can be any better than a C; he did nothing more than I would expect for an international keeper and could have spread himself better against Germany. I thought it was a joke that people were praising him after some of the games.

  12. Bluebybirth says:

spot on list! rooney derves a d- though, he had three touches per game at the most!

  13. dc says:

100% agree with the statement on joe hart– he shouldnt be judged by his age or international pedigree, the guy is simply a better goalkeeper than the other 2. he earned his spot and was denied it by capello as far as im concerned
