Football’s Greatest Songs, No.2: You’ll Never Walk Alone by Rodgers and Hammerstein

15th, October 2007

Liverpool, and to a lesser extent Celtic fans have made this song their own. It’s taken from the musical Carousel, although most people in the UK are more aware of it from cover versions, most notably the one performed by Gerry & the Pacemakers. Other artists who have covered the song include Aretha Franklin (whose version was played at John Peel’s funeral; Peel was a fervent Red), Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and, last but not least, Robson & Jerome.
Here’s how it should be sung:

    Celtic sang it first…

  2. Kipp says:

Is it to a lesser extent because they have less fans?
I agree with scottish steve its a celtic song, liverpool just really really liked it

  3. Jon says:

I’ve yet to hear actual evidence of this.
The Gerry and the Pacemakers version came out in winter 1963, and with Panorama footage from 1964 of the Kop at Anfield singing it, that’d mean either they both adopted it at the same time – the popular release of the song…OR, Celtic adopted it when it was a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical – which I doubt.

  4. Zach says:

I promise you that it is a Liverpool first sung song. It’s a known fact. Look at The Guardian’s March 12, 2003 issue. Granted the jury is still out, the evidence is about 90/10 for ‘Pool.,9204,912750,00.html

  5. keving says:

As a Celtic fan, i have to admit all the evidence points to Liverpool singing it first..really i don’t think there is any argument whether or not that is the case.
It’s a bit like Everton fans saying they sang “hail hail” first…..
I’ll take umbridge at the “to a lesser extent” quote…both clubs use it now…we do a decent version of it as do Liverpool…it is seen as a Liverpool and Celtic song.
The reason…both clubs fans stick by their teams through thick and lose or draw…

  6. Tom F says:

Celtic fans didn’t adopt ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ until much, much later. I’m not sure what motivates them to keep claiming they adopted it earlier. Any serious football supporter with a good memory knows this isn’t true. The connection to Liverpool is well documented.

You can buy Borussia Dortmund merchandise that says You’ll Never Walk Alone on it as well. I’m not sure the origins of that…
