Newcastle United 2-0 Liverpool – Premier League – 1st April 2012

Returning to Newcastle for the first time since moving to Anfield, misfiring Liverpool striker Andy Carroll once again failed to live up to even a bit of the £35million paid for him by Kenny Dalglish.

The target-man’s dismal afternoon, which saw him booked for diving and subbed on 79 minutes was representative of the Reds’ disappointing display. Newcstle, on the other hand, produced an excellent home performance, with Senegalese striker Papiss Demba Cisse netting twice to move the Mapgies level on points with Chelsea in fifth-place in the table.

Cisse’s first goal came on 19 minutes after good work from the in-form Hatem Ben Arfa, while his second, on the hour mark, came courtesy of a fine centre from Demba Ba.

To make matters worse for a Liverpool side that looked totally lacking in belief, Pepe Reina was sent off late on after the Spaniard lead with his head when squaring up to James Perch. Jose Enrique, a former Magpie who once questioned Newcastle’s top six ambitions, took over between the posts.

Alan Pardew’s surprise package of the season are now five points off a Champions League spot while Liverpool, losing the sixth league game in seven, languish in eight place, a point behind Everton.

Yet Dalglish will probably come out and say that the season is still a success and that the team’s place in the EPL table doesn’t matter.

  2. ds. says:

Kenny was probably the right man at the right time when he came in. but the right time ended the moment last season did.

i just hope the owners have the balls to fire him.

  3. fouldsy says:

maybe if carroll hadn’t have dived, perch wouldn’t have. maybe, just maybe.

  4. Solihull United says:

good for newcastle. after losing nolan and barton in the summer they really picked their game up if ba cisse and ben arfa stay in the form they’re in they may be able to clinch 4th if spurs and chelsea have a couple of bad games

  5. Jarren says:

@Solihull United: Yeah, if Spurs, Chelsea (& Arsenal) drop points and Newcastle go on a mental winning streak…

As much as it would be interesting to see Newcastle in the CL next season I think 5th place is the most ambitious they can aim for.

However, I really can’t see the 3 London clubs dropping that many points.

All in all, 6th place would be a fantastic result for Newcastle.

as a liverpool supporter ive been very disappionted with how the club has been ran in the last several months. For God sakes down on points to the Toffees? It surely cant be, i must be dreaming. hopefully LFC picks up the pace a bit or i wake from this horrible nightmare of Liverpool Mediocredy soon

  7. Alex says:

We had the win and the moral high ground after Carrolls shocking performance, give credit to James Perch for managing to throw it all away right at the end, completely humiliating.

    I agree with DS

Kenny stabilised things last season but since then his transfer market dealings and tactics in general have been atrocious. We definitely needed someone with new attacking tactics and a proper re-building plan, ironically kinda like Newcastle have done.

But not just that, the players we have bought, the English ones, look to be overwhelmed by the pressures of the club, apart from the foreign ones, like Enrique and Bellamy (lol). The other problem is that players who seem to be on the same wavelength when playing, like Kuyt, Suarez, Maxi and Bellamy, hardly get any time on the pitch together, instead we have Carroll, Henderson & Downing strutting their stuff so elegantly.

Its time for Kenny to stop with the flops and play the players who know how to win games. Its crazy to think we actually miss Lucas.

  9. Mikey J says:

Kenny was never the right man for the job. OK as a caretaker but should have been shown the door in the summer. I’m amazed FSG deviated from their plan of appointing a young European manager – I think they allowed the sentiment of the vocal minority (the Spirit of Shankly knobs and similar) to influence them. If you’re going to sign British players then chances are you’re going to end up with a shit team.

Anyway, on a more serious matter I hope James Perch makes a full recovery #PrayforPerch

  10. newcassel says:

Perch is a cu#t…embarassing…hope Reina appeals and gets to play in the semi-final. Mind, Liverpool are going to need him like

  11. Davy says:

Do you think Jose Enrique might regret saying this last year…….

“The club(Newcastle) is allowing all the major players of the team to go. Seriously, do you think it is the fault of the players? This club will never again fight to be among the top 6 again with this policy.’

oh dear, off you go then!!
