Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea – Premier League – 8th May 2012

It may not make up for the weekend’s FA Cup final disappointment, but a fine 4-1 mauling of Cup winners Chelsea did give the Anfield faithful something to cheer about on Tuesday night.

Chelsea may have been without the services of the likes of Petr Cech, Juan Mata and Frankie Lamps, but their performance was still surprisingly poor, with JT having an utter shocker at the back. Reserve ‘keeper Ross Turnball didn’t do much better as the home side took a three-goal lead going in at half-time, courtesy of a Michael Essien OG, and strikes from Jordan Henderson (yes, really!) and Daniel Agger.

Ramires got one back for the visitors on 50 minutes before Jonjo Shelvey made it 4-1 on the hour-mark.

After the final whistle, either the Liverpool players took turn in holding Shelvey aloft to congratulate him on his goal, or several of them paraded their babies around Anfield. We’re still not quite sure which.

The result sees Chelsea out of the race for a top-four spot, with their hopes of a Euro-adventure next season now resting on their Champions League final in Munich. While the Reds are now just one point behind rivals Everton with one game left to play.
