Brendan Rodgers Agrees Deal To Become New Liverpool Manager

By Chris Wright

As best we know, Brendan Rodgers has just agreed a three-year deal that will see him leaving Swansea to become Liverpool’s new manager. However, it’s not been officially squared away quite yet as the two clubs are still in the process of finalising a £4 million-odd compensation payment.

Apparently Rodgers renewed his interest in the post after Liverpool owners FSG shelved their plans to bring in Louis van Gaal as a director of football, plans which also put off Roberto Martinez – and rightly so. Who wants a brazen bollock-flasher repeatedly going over their head? No-one, that’s who.

Pretty galling for Swansea to lose their inspirational leader (the fear will surely be that he dismantles the Swans squad over the summer with some choice cherry-picking) after only one year at the top table – you get the feeling that Gylfi Sigurdsson must be similarly peeved – but a good appointment from Liverpool’s perspective; relatively cheap, progressive thinking, young(ish), aspirational, intelligent, etc, etc.

Will Rodgers be able to milk the same cute possession game he fostered at Swansea from the players at his disposal at Liverpool, i.e, create his ‘Liverpoolona’? We ain’t so sure – at least not immediately, which never tends to go down well on Merseyside.

Quick prediction: It all goes tits up by Christmas and King Kenny Dalglish (Liverpool man, knows the club inside out) is bought in as the saviour. Failing that? Rafa. Always Rafa.

    haha

  2. Mr Sensible says:

Will be interesting to see what he does with Gerrard seeing as Rodgers seems to like central midfielders who are technically good, comfortable with the ball under pressure, always looking for short, quick passing, like to keep possession and play for the team.

To be fair it’s a hard one to call, he’s clearly a talented manager but I can’t see him given much time which is pretty vital for any manager to succeed. Bit of a risk by Liverpool really considering he’s only managed 1 season in the PL.

  3. Grant says:

Surely the smart thing for Swansea to do would be to try to get Martinez back?

Having been smart enough to hire a very able and young(ish) manager, I suspect the new ownership will be further smart enough to give him a reasonable time to produce results. Perhaps minimum of top six finish and Europa League in 12-13, top four and UCL in 13-14 and back in real contention to win the EPL in 14-15. And, of course, to never, ever finish behind Everton again.

    @usrick

That’s not asking too much is it!

  6. sanchez says:

Gerrard out, Sigurdsson in? I’d have stayed at Swansea.

  7. Wilma says:

Martínez hasn’t been welcomed back to Swansea since he left. He made such a point that he wouldn’t leave, that people we’re pretty pissed when he did. Kind of like Brendan… El Judas part 2?

  8. Jarren says:

I mostly feel sorry for Swansea.

Their fans must have been full of optimism for the new season, with their forward thinking squad and bright manager.

Now, well it’s not too certain where Swansea will head.

I agree that Martinez would be the best logical choice.

As for Liverpool, it’s a rather large step up from Swansea.

Will Rodgers cope with the pressure? It’s a massive step for a young manager.

What what that other bloke’s name again, Andre Villas something…

  9. Neil says:

Good choice by Liverpool. I do, like others here, feel sorry for Swansea. The Swans played some of the most attractive football in the league last season, and I hope that they are able to continue their progress. Hiring Martinez would make a lot of sense — though I also have a soft spot for Wigan.

I’m not believing a word of it until Dave Whelan confirms it.

  11. alex says:

why give him a three year contract? he has a year

desperately sad considering swansea beat liverpool on the last day, two clubs going in opposite directions, swansea could’ve developed nicely but rodgers is more interested in preserving the status quo

  12. Connor says:

Gutted for Swansea. Gutted for Rogers too…Sinclair, Sigurdsson, and Britton ooze class in comparison to the likes of Henderson, Downing, and Spearing

  13. Wilma says:

Martínez won’t be back. He’s never had a good reception coming back to Swansea. He made such a big point of not leaving, and then did; sort of like Rodgers… El Judas part 2?? Not really.

  14. Milkchew says:

Me to Rob. Dave Whelan knows all.
