Photos: Liverpool 2-1 Wigan – Rafa relieved after much-needed win

Mini match report: If Liverpool are to finish in the top four, as Rafa ‘guaranteed’ earlier this week, then they must win matches like this. And so they did, with goals by David Ngog and sub Fernando Torres, although Charles N’Zogbia’s excellent goal in the dying minutes will have raised heart rates on the Kop, not to mention the home technical area.

It wasn’t exactly a convincing performance by the Reds on the evening the club celebrated the 50th anniversary of Bill Shankly’s appointment as manager, but they created enough chances to merit the three points. Rafa’s men move up to sixth, on 27 points – that’s three behind fifth-placed Spurs.
