Maybe not a marquee signing but still a very good and very consistent player, Clint ‘Deuce’ Dempsey found himself in the middle of a bit of a furore today after the Fenway Sports Group, who own Liverpool, stated on their website that the American attacker had joined Reds (see above).

This was apparently news to Dempsey’s current club, Fulham, who swiftly declared that their star player hadn’t moved to  Andfield after all. Cue the original post on the Fenway Sports Group getting a rather quick edit, which erased any mention of Dempsey. See here for the new, Clint-free post.

The website in question is actually hosted by sports network company NESN.com. However, ’tis all a bit of an embarrassment. Although to be honest, the move will probably still take place.

The journos back in Britain will be proud of your loaded misleading title. Not to mention entry paragraph, only at the end do you mention it was on the NESN website.

Congratulations you ought to write for NewsCorp.

  2. Mr. Chopper says:

Hey Toz – I probably wouldn’t comment on other people’s writing styles whilst you’re still dwelling in that fine glass house.

  3. Mr. T says:

@ Mr. Chopper – I normally enjoy WAATP posts, but Toz does have a point here. The headline is clearly misleading. FSG has not released any statement that Dempsey has signed. An independent website ran with the story because of their own lack of research. So how have the LFC owners jumped the gun?

Also the post is clearly contradictory, as it states int he first paragraph that “the Fenway Sports Group, who own Liverpool, stated on their website that the American attacker had joined Reds” while later stating that the website in question is hosted by a third party.

This signing seems to have a faint echo of Park to Utd. No doubt he is a very good football player but not quite in the elite bracket and I think his nationality and that of the owners, ie they are trying to flog Liverpool to the American market, is what is driving this transfer as much as their need for the player’s ability.

Can we have some more ‘sponsored posts’? I particuarly enjoyed that one about laser eye surgery.

  6. Jimmy says:

According to wikipedia NESN is 80% owned by Fenway Sports Group. It’s not a stretch to see the website as a mouthpiece for Fenway.

  7. Graham says:

    WAATP has misled us!
And to think I had trusted them all this time!!

Guess maybe I should cancel my eye surgery appointment after all.

  8. plops says:

Good point by One England Captain there.

  9. Al says:

I’m pretty sure NESN.com isn’t independent from FSG, definitely some link there hence the story

  10. Mr. T says:

Ladies and Gentlemen I stand corrected. It is true that NESN is owned by FSG (80%) stake. Although I could squirm out by saying that the FSG website is actually fenwaysportsgroup.com and not nesn.com, I wont. I could also point out that corporate veil dictates that regardless of ownership (parent subsidiary relationship) NESN is an independent legal personality but I wont do that either.

    @One England Captain
I don’t think he would help shirt sales at all over here. Not too many people give a shit about him honestly. It’s not the same as the Asian market where they go nuts if an Asian player is on a certain team and buy loads of shirts and stuff. He wouldn’t make a bit of difference in the commercial revenue.

  12. usrick says:

Dempsey being American may be part of the reason LFC are apparently buying him, but he is certainly a worthwhile addition to the team (as his performance at Fulham clearly showed).

    Standards slipping, eh?

Tell you what, bung in an attractive carriage clock with my laser eye surgery and nothing more’ll be said.

You know, I hear Optimax is the UK’s NUMBER 1 Laser Eye Surgery Specialist *.

Just a shame that when I went on their website I got a warning from my safe search tool (mass spamming, apparently).

    Who’d have guessed?

    * Other Laser Eye Surgery Specialists are available

  15. Luke says:

Hahhahaha “The team that game within a game of winning the FA Cup”

    What a claim.

  16. Karl says:

Bloody daft tossers. I swear it if Dempsey moves to them rubbish Scouse, he’d be as good as “in search of ambition” Bobby Zamora, QPR.

  17. XYZZZ says:

I thought that Rodgers’ priority was to ship some shit he has on the books and not to bring even more of it. Sad times for Liverpool when they sign such dross
