In an act which will, in its own little way, bring close together the peoples of Mansfield and Ghana, everybody’s favourite Premier League pantomime villain Luis Suarez blatantly handled the ball on the way to scoring Liverpool’s second against Mansfield.

To be fair to the striker, as he fired the ball into the empty net, it looked as though even he thought the referee would blow for a foul. But no whistle came and so the Uruguayan celebrated his cheeky goal.

Play to the whistle, they say, and Suarez did. Not his fault the officials were rubbish.

Oh, and ESPN’s Jon Champion seemed to go rather OTT in his criticising of Suarez for the incident, calling him “a cheat”,  not something the commentator would have done if the perpetrator had been English, I imagine.

  1. Phil says:

    Play to the whistle.

  2. Locky says:

With the speed the whole incident happened at he didn’t have the time to decide whether or not what he was doing was in the spirit of the game. Stuck his hand out more as a reflex reaction. As for having the honesty to let the ref know the goal should have been chopped off, you’d struggle to find a player that honest.

  3. Applesauce says:

These refs really need to be held more responsible…

    That’s as clear as day.

  4. GYU says:

STILL CHEATED THOUGH YOU DUMB PRICK

  5. Ha! says:

Agreed, his body language shows him giving up on it and he bashes it in. I love/hate him because he does anything to win.

  6. […] will be sharpening their (metaphorical) pencils today after their favourite baddie, Luis Suarez, blatantly handled the ball on the way to Scoring Liverpool’s winner against non-league Mansfield […]

  7. Mr. Chopper says:

Officials did see it and deemed it as not deliberate, apparently.

  8. JF96 says:

That was never an intentional handball. What do you expect him to do run with his hands by his side ? He looked at the ref after the goal fully expecting it to be dis-allowed yet Andre Mariner allowed it. Hardly going to contest a goal once its been given.

“Silly media storm” ? Let’s see what you hypocrites have to say if United get a semi-contentious decision against Liverpool at the weekend.

  10. scotspur says:

if FIFA would have cut his arm off after the Ghana handball incident like they should have then this would have never happened

  11. Applesauce says:

    ^Now that’s forward thinking!

We also should’ve sewn his mouth shut after his racist comments.

  12. Applesauce says:

That would also remedy the problem of having to see those hideously crooked piano keys in his mouth.

  13. RSB says:

That’s cause he is a cheat!

  14. Dont Worry says:

Also would stop him from eating people

Well, Liverpool fans will rightly be pissed off when the inevitable happens but the media won’t give two shits. Even if they are it’ll be the referee who gets the ire (rightly so) if he misses something obvious, not the player – that’s reserved for Suarez.

I don’t recall the commentator calling Valencia a cheat for going over like a sack of shit to win a penalty at Anfield this season, or calling Berbatov a cheat for diving to win a penalty at Old Trafford when Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup there two years ago. Both of those two were involved in a deliberate act of cheating (i.e. diving) as opposed to an accidental handball, so why the double standards?

There’s a lot of bollocks spouted when it comes to Suarez and it’s getting tiresome.

Dear Who Ate All The Pies

Tristan O’Carroll here from ESPN’s press office. I wanted to share with you a statement (attributed to an ESPN spokesman and not to me) around our lead commentator Jon Champion’s comments yesterday in case you have or will be running something about it. Would appreciate if you would fold into any posts.

“We take our responsibility to deliver the highest standards of coverage to our viewers. ESPN’s editorial policy is for commentators to be unbiased and honest, to call things as they see them. Inevitably this can involve treading a fine line on occasion, especially in the heat of the moment. Comments during the Mansfield v Liverpool match caused offence where none was intended and we have spoken to our commentator about this incident.”

    Thank for your time.

    Regards,

    Tristan
