After Europol kindly gave us some clues yesterday, Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet reckon they’ve nailed which Champions League fixture, played in England within the last four years, it was that was fixed by the nasty men from Asia.

(We must admit that out first thought was the Liverpool 8-0 Besiktas debacle, but it turns out that the Turkish side were actually just that bad!)

Having woken up in the middle of the night with a raging clue, Ekstra Bladet are reporting this morning that the game in question was Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Debrecen at Anfield in 2009 and that the game was fiddled by the Hungarian team’s goalkeeper. Liverpool themselves are not under suspicion.

German police have already established that a Croatian match-fixing ring attempted to diddle another of Debrecen’s matches during the very same Champions League campaign – the 4-3 defeat against Fiorentina.

The Debrecen goalkeeper, Vukasin Poleksic, was banned from football for two years by UEFA after being found guilty of failing to report the approach from match-fixers before the Fiorentina match, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport upholding the ban after Poleksic appealed.

Apparently the match-fixers wanted “at least three goals” in the Liverpool-Debrecen game and text each other to express their disappointment when Poleksic only managed to let in one, parrying a Fernando Torres shot straight to the feet of Dirk Kuyt, who duly scored the only goal of the night.

Sadly, we feel there is much more to follow…

how long will it be before they come knocking on Fergies door and that of his pet officials.

    ^^

Oh yet another ‘Fergie Owns the FA’ joke?

Some people need to get a grip.

  3. Si says:

@Bill – probably around the same time that non-Man Utd fans come to terms with the fact that Fergie’s boys have consistently been the best team in England for the last decade or so. So, never.

(And this admission comes from a Toon supporter)

  4. One Man Went to Mow says:

Anyone else highly amused that even when the fix is in for a thrashing Liverpool can’t manage more than a grinding one nil win at home to Champions League Minows

  5. Jim says:

People should realise the vast majority of match-fixing incidents is players conceding things like a corner and stuff for the sake of betting, pressured by criminals. Not vast conspiracies from the UEFA to seriously change the flow of a tournament.

  6. Jesus says:

Basiktas played against CSKA Sofia in Europa League couple of years ago. Besiktas won 0-2 and after the game there were rumours claiming that the bosses of CSKA Sofia and Besiktas agreed that CSKA must lose because they had no chance to go thru the group and Besiktas was fighting for the 1st place.

Anyways, many games are manipulated nowadays…

  7. Jesus says:

    Forgot to say….

During that match (CSKA SOFIA-BESIKTAS) the first goal was scored after CSKA’s goalkeeper( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ra%C3%AFs_M%27Bolhi ) /Algerian international and 1st choice/ made a “weird” mistake and slipped!/he was known for having good skills with the ball/

  8. Titus says:

I find these allegations rather puzzling to me. If I was a goalkeeper, and I was bribed to allow in 3 goals by a team considered vastly superior to mine and at their ground as well, I can’t imagine that would be very difficult to do. This just doesn’t add up. It’s not even like the goal Liverpool scored in that game was due to poor goalkeeping so egregious as to elicit suspicion.

@Si, Man United has not been dominating the Premier League for a decade, they’ve been dominating it for the last 2 decades

Liverpool: The only team to score 1 goal against a keeper paid to concede at least 2. Comedy gold!
