Liverpool’s new owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks are set to make £40 million available for Rafa Benitez to go on a summer spending spree. Pies gives you the lowdown on the players linked with a move to Anfield today.
1 Daniel Alves (Sevilla)
Benitez has been slobbering over the right-sided Brazilian for a long time. The Reds failed to land the full-back/winger last July, but Alves was reported to be keen on the move. Sevilla’s £12 million asking price was thought to be the only stumbling block. Liverpool’s new found millions could be the solution.

2 Deco (Barcelona)
Could be a test of whether Gillett and Hicks’ money really speaks. Deco has been linked with a move to Manchester United or Chelsea, but Liverpool could be ready to take the initiative. The Portuguese community of Stamford Bridge seems a more favourable destination though.
3 Samuel Eto’o (Barcelona)
If Deco is a test of Liverpool’s new spending power, Eto’o might be a bridge too far. With Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all interested – and that is just the Premiership teams – it seems unlikely that the 26-year-old Cameroon international will end up at Anfield.
4 David Villa (Valencia)
Again, it might take another Champions League trophy to convince Villa that Liverpool is the best destination for him. Rafa does love to sweet-talk Spanish talent though and might fancy his chances of bringing the 23-year-old strike to Liverpool.
5 Darren Bent (Charlton)
Rafa’s safety net beneath these lofty transfer targets is thought to be Charlton’s Darren Bent. A bid of £15 million would secure the services of the 23-year-old England striker. Liverpool might even get Bent on he cheap if Charlton are relegated.

Think Deco and Eto’o between them would fit the bill pretty nicely for Liverpool. They have a very solid defence but sometimes lack a bit of invention in midfield and a bit of speed in attack. Of course, whether they’d want to come is another matter.
I think David Villa should be the No.1 name on Liverpool’s list
I can’t see both Deco and Etoo leaving Barca. Either one would be a nice pick-up though. Villa however, jumps out to me. With Chelsea apparently tightening the belt this could be their best chance to get him.

dani alves a must buy for a team of liverpools quality u kneed the right amount of pace although bellamy and gonzales give this they need the flair that alves can bring to the table
simao sabrosa quality player with the right amount of preparation and training hecould just turn out to be the buy of the season if liverpool could capture his signature with cristiano ronaldo already taking the premiership buy storm i believe simao witholds the same atributes as the o so menacing right midfielder
as for s.eto i dont believe he woulsd settle well in the prem so i think he would be a bad signing
if uwant a 20 goal season man look no further than vincenzo laquinta he can hold the ball and has tremendous strength he also has an inteligant football mind making him also tricky for defenders to handle he is the next berbatov!!!!!!!!!
Rafa must be one of the best managers in top flight football at the moment, going from what he’s achieved with very little funds available, as opposed to Mourinho (Gobshite) and his millions.
We’re not far from competing with Chelsea and Man U for the title, given the funds, I think with Rafa we can go all the way….this season’s prob was a bad start.
My team would be, At the moment we are extremely strong in centre mid and central def, our flanks both defefnsive and attacking could do with some quality so with 40m, I would look for only a few players with real top quality.

henry would be nice but samuel eto’o and david villa should be the top signing. darren bent will do us a good service. daniel alves would be great and definitely Deco. liverpool should have worked harder for the champions league and Kuyt should have had help up front.
If I was Rafa:
Firstly sign Torres or David Villa they have to be must buys. Will score 20 or 25 goals a season. Etoo won’t fit in to the Liverpool team and is more suited to Chelsea or Man Utd and Henry looks pretty much out of reach.
Liverpool also need to sign a left winger as Gonzalez is going back to Spain and Kewell isnt good enough. I would like to see maybe Sergio Aguero from Athletico Madrid but that would mean about 20-25 million pounds. Phillip Lahm would be a good signing for around £10m and he can also play at left back.
Simao could also be a good buy to give depth in right midfield. Cost about £12m.
Dani Alves is a very good right back as Finnan is starting to lose his quality. He would cost about £10m but it would be a good signing in the long run as he is still young.
A centre back to replace Jamie Carragher will be needed but he still has a couple of seasons left in him.
