Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal – Premier League – 8th February 2014

Britain Soccer Premier League

Liverpool produced a magnificent display in the early game on Saturday, thrashing league-leaders Arsenal at Anfield. The home side rocketed out of the blocks, closing down the Gunners and tearing the famed Arsenal backline apart. Indeed, the Reds were 2-0 up after just 10 minutes, courtesy of an unlikely brace from Martin Skrtel, with Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge also netting before the break to all but finish off the game within 45 minutes.

After the break, Sterling got his second before a Mikel Arteta penalty, after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had been felled by Steven Gerrard, at least secured a goal for the Gunners.

The thoroughly deserved win sees Liverpool move to within five points of Arsenal, who remain top, at least before the rest of Saturday’s games. However, the real questions are (a) how much psychological damage will this mauling do to Arsene Wenger’s men, as yet another February capitulation starts to look increasingly likely and (b) are Liverpool genuine title contenders?
