A couple of Steven Gerrard penalties helped Liverpool to a 2- win at the Boleyn ground on Sunday to send the Reds back to the top of the table. James Tomkins handled the ball in the box to give Gerrard his first spot-kick but just before the break Guy Demel equalised, albeit after Andy Carroll had put his hand int he ace of Liverpool ‘keeper Simon Mignolet.

In the second period, Carroll hit the woodwork with a bullet header but it was a dodgy decision by ref Anthony Taylor to award a penalty to the Reds after Hammers’ ‘keeper Adrian had clearly got the ball before catching Jon Flanagan which ultimately decided the game. Gerrard converted the spot-kick to give the visitors a victory which their overall performance had deserved (Luis Suarez hit the woodwork twice) and which moved them back to the summit.
