Liverpool 3-2 Manchester City – Premier League – 13th April 2014

What a cracking game of football this was with Liverpool once again starting superbly against one of their rivals, with Raheem Sterling and Martin Skrtel putting the home side 2-0 up at the break. To be fair to City, the loss of Yaya Touré courtesy of an injury on 19 minutes did their cause no good. However, the introduction of James Milner just after half-time kickstarted the Citizens, with David Silva starting to dictate the play. City’s new-found swagger culminated in a goal from the Spanish schemer followed soon after by an OG from Glen Johnson to set up a dramatic finale.

While the visitors may have been on the front-foot in the second period, Liverpool regained their composure and were rewarded with what turned out to be the winning striker from Coutinho after an error from City captain Vincent Kompany, who had looked shaky all game.

As well as the goals, there was plenty of other drama with Luis Suarez was lucky not be shown a second yellow for a trademark dive although Liverpool were then denied what looked to be a nailed on penalty although late on Martin Skrtel’s blatant punching of the ball in the Reds’ box was missed by referee Mark Clattenburg. Jordan Henderson saw red late on for an over-the-top challenge on Samir Nasri but ultimately Brendan Rodgers’ side held on.

Liverpool are now five points clear of Chelsea (who have a game in hand and who still have to travel to Anfield) and seven clear of Man City, who have two games in hand. What a finish to the season it’s turning out to be!

There is a title race on ladies and gentleman.

  2. buster says:

City have blown it they had numerous chances to put the game to bed in the second half but dreadful finishing and it has to be said a dreadful attitude to start the match has cost them, the manager will be and rightfully should be sacked his tactics were to negative to start the game and we all knew Liverpool would come flying out of the blocks, when City opened up in the second half they were all over Liverpool then they gift the reds a winner, Cities lack of discipline has cost them this season but that’s the managers fault, to not win the title with that group of players and their money is not acceptable with the right man in charge they are head and shoulders above the rest but if Liverpool think its all over I would think again because Chelsea and master tactician Morinho could still yet spoil the party and comfortably beat the reds at their ground.

@buster: That’s easy for you to say but it’s still a 3 horse race.

  4. Al says:

@ buster – it’s that type of attitude to sacking managers that has the Premier league the way it is. Yes City have the spending power but Pelegrini is in his first season, surely if you want continued success you need to give a manager time to build regrdless of the budget, talk of sacking him is patethic

  5. Dan says:

buster? Pelligrini sacked? you’re having a laugh mate. A manager can only do so much. City have played well this year and still have a chance to win the title and you’re calling for managers sacking? You’ve got to be a city supporter, because you have a bitch when things don’t go your way. That team costs far too much money, players of that caliber would blame themselves. They don’t walk off the pitch saying “we lost because of our manager”. You actually fuckin annoy me you idiot

  6. Mr. Chopper says:

Buster, Pelligrini’s turned City into a proper team.

For Liverpool to win the league they’re going to have to equal the Invincibles’ record of league wins on the bounce, unless one of the other teams seriously messes up. They’ve broken countless records all season, but if they managed that it would be up there with the great EPL wins. I just think it’s a stretch too far myself and, even if that was the case, they’ve still had their best season for years.

  7. TravisKOP says:

@Al: Example being Brendan Rodgers being allowed two seasons to put together the team he has now and look at the results.

Liverpool needs to be used as an example as to why constant manager sackings are ludicrous.
