In an incredibly dramatic final day of action, outsiders Liverpool Ladies secured the WSL title after leapfrogging Chelsea and Birmingham to the trophy.

Finding themselves in third place at the start of the day, behind leaders Chelsea and second-placed Birmingham, the Reds pulled off an incredible title victory by beating Bristol Academy 3-0  courtesy of goals from Natasha Dowie, Lucy Bronze and Fara Williams (courtesy of a penalty).

On its own, Liverpool’s win should have had minimal effect on the outcome of the WSL title. However, leaders Chelsea lost 2-1 away to Manchester City, in a game which saw the Citizens go down to 10 women after Abbie McManus saw red for elbowing Yuki Ogimi. However, even with a one-player advantage coupled with the fact that City rested a number of key players ahead of their forthcoming FA Cup final clash with Arsenal, Chelsea just couldn’t find an equaliser to give them the draw they needed.

Second placed Birmingham were also in the running for the title but the Blues could only draw 2-2 at home to Notts County, thus leaving Liverpool to retain their WSL title on goal difference. Fantastic, dramatic stuff!
