Liverpool 2-2 Leicester City – Premier League – 1st January 2015

A lacklustre Liverpool side threw away a two-goal lead at home to Leicester at Anfield in a game full of controversy.

The Reds were 2-0 at the break courtesy of two Steven Gerrard penalties. Neither spot-kick was clear-cut, with Mike Jones wrongly judging Wes Morgan to have handled in his own box when the ball clearly hit the defender in the face. A second dubious penalty was then awarded by Jones when Philippe Coutinho’s pass hit Danny Simpson on the arm. However, whatever the validity of the decisions, Reds’ captain Gerrard stepped up to fire both home.

After the break, the Foxes battled to get themselves back into the game, with David Nugent and then Jeff Schlupp deservedly putting the visitors back on level terms. Sub Lazar Markovic had a great chance to win the game for the hosts late on but ultimately a share of the points was the least Leicester deserved.

Liverpool go eighth, seven points off a Champions League berth while Nigel Pearson’s Foxes stay bottom.
