Former Liverpool winger Sebastien Leto is due to undergo surgery in the next 48 hours after caving in his own skull in a freak gym accident.

Leto, who spent one season at Anfield in 2007/08 and currently plays for Lanus in his native Argentina, had to be rushed to hospital after accidentally dropping a barbell on his head.

The 28-year-old forward suffered a deep lesion on his head but was initially patched up at the scene and sent home.

However, a hospital examination subsequently found he’d fractured his skull.

Lanus have released the following statement:

“Yesterday, Sebastian Leto, during routine work in the gym, suffered an accident with head trauma, leaving a wound in his scalp.

“He was treated at the club, [however] an hour after consultation with the medical team he complained of a headache and was evaluated again.

“After the evaluation it was decided he should attend hospital, where he was diagnosed with a fractured skull.

“He was assessed by a neurological team who confirmed the fracture.

“He was then evaluated by Dr. Cristian Fuster who decided he needed surgical treatment, which take place within the next 48 hrs.”

According to reports in the Argentinian press, Leto’s injuries are not life-threatening though his recovery is scheduled to take between four and six months.

Crikey. Talk about doing yourself a mischief.

Best of luck to the poor sod.
