Southampton 0-2 Liverpool – Premier League – 22nd February 2015
In a frantic game at St. Mary’s, Liverpool secured a vital victory which sees them move to within two points of a Champions League berth.
Philippe Coutinho lashed home a superb opener after just three minutes before the Saints had a couple of penalty shouts, both of which were waved away by referee Kevin Friend. Indeed, Liverpool themselves also claimed a spot-kick when Jose Fonte challenged Raheem Sterling in the box. However, on this occasion, Friend was correct not to award the penalty, with the Southampton man getting some of the ball.
While the Saints had carried a goal threat in the first period, after the break they struggled to break down the Reds, and ultimately it was the visitors who would score the second and final goal of the game. Sterling was the scorer of that decisive goal, with the England man firing home after a poor clearance from the Saints.
Brendan Rodgers’ men go sixth, just one place and one point behind Ronald Koeman’s side.
