With Steven Gerrard swanning off to retire slowly in Los Angeles and absolutely nobody else to choose from, Liverpool have officially appointed Jordan Henderson as their new club captain…

Having been handed vice-captaincy last September, Henderson spent a lot of last season filling in with armband for Gerrard as he flitted in and out of Brendan Rodgers’ ingenious, fluid tactical system during the latter half of 2014/15.

“I’m absolutely delighted and proud. It is a great honour and a huge privilege to be named as the captain of this football club,” Hendo told the Liverpool website.

To be fair, it was nailed on, as is his future England captaincy as and when. Not bad for a resolutely unspectacular 6/10 midfielder who moves with all the grace of a Welsh dresser falling down stairs.
