Southampton will take a narrow 1-0 lead with them when they travel to Anfield in two weeks, courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 first-leg EFL Cup win at St. Mary’s on Wednesday night.
Nathan Redmond scored the only goal of the game on 20 minutes, with the attacker firing a low shot past Loris Karius.
Liverpool struggled to create throughout the game despite Jurgen Klopp putting out a very strong 11.
Saints could have increased their lead, only for goalscorer Redmond to miss a couple of chances.
Full-back Cedric Soares also failed to make the most of a good chance after the break.
On a positive note for the Reds, Philippe Coutinho made his return from an injury, courtesy of a sub appearance.
However, overall, it was a disappointing night for Liverpool, who will need to improve their overall performance ahead of the second leg at Anfield on January 25th.
