A late Miguel Britos equaliser secured a share of spoils for Watford against Liverpool at Vicarage Road on Saturday, in what was a terrific encounter.

The Reds were without wantaway playmaker Philippe Coutinho, who remains injured, and they went behind after just eight minutes, via a headed effort from Stefano Okaka after some dismal Liverpool defending.

Just before the half-hour mark, the visitors notched a deserved equaliser, with Sadio Mané scoring a superb effort after lovely play involving Alberto Moreno and Emre Can.

However, despite looking shaky at the back, the Hornets still threatened in attack and eventually went ahead again, when Abdoulaye Doucoure netted from close-range on 29 minutes.

In the second-half, Liverpool were the far better side, and got back on level terms, after Heurelho Gomes felled Mohamed Salah in the box, with Roberto Firmino converting the resulting spot-kick.

Summer-signing Salah then put the visitors ahead, firing home from close-range after Firmino had lobbed Gomes.

The Merseysiders looked like adding to their lead, with Joel Matip hitting the frame of the goal and Alberto Moreno and Dejan Lovren both going close.

However, with the game well into injury time, Britos bundled the ball home after Liverpool once again failed to deal with a Watford corner. Although the frustrated visitors wanted the bizarre goal chalked off for offside.

The result, in Jurgen Klopp’s 100th game in charge of the Reds, will frustrate the German, after seeing his side come so close to winning. Although his charges’ weak defending remains a concern.
