Manchester City moved to within four points of league leaders Liverpool after coming out on top in a gargantuan clash with the Reds at the Etihad on Thursday evening.
Jurgen Klopp’s unbeaten side came to Manchester hoping to extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points.
However, they came up against a City side desperate to peg back the Merseysiders in the race for the title.
In a frenetic first-half, the Reds were denied an opener by just millimetres, after a John Stone clearance following a Sadio Mane which had hit the post ricocheted back of Ederson and towards the City goal.
However, the England defender somehow managed to keep the ball out of the goal by the most minimal of margins.
City would eventually take the lead just before the break, courtesy of a superb Sergio Aguero finish following a cross from the outstanding Bernardo Silva.
The half also saw Vincent Kompany somewhat lucky to stay on the pitch after the Belgian picked up only a yellow card for a dangerous challenge on Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool pushed for an equaliser after the break and it eventually came just after the hour-mark, with Roberto Firmino heading home from close-range after outstanding play from full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson in the build-up.
The goal prompted Klopp into a rather bizarre water bottle-strangling celebration.
A draw would have suited the visitors but City weren’t finished yet.
Raheem Sterling was a threat all evening with his direct running, and on 72 minutes, the England man would set up Leroy Sané who fired home via the inside of the post.
Liverpool would lay siege to the City goal late on, with Pep Guardiola takling out his frustrations on his scarf after a couple of possible fouls were ignored by the officials.
The home side would hold on to secure a vital victory which keeps the title race well and truly open.
The result also ends Liverpool’s unbeaten season, and leaves Arsenal fans with their Invincibles season to hold on to.
Overall, City were worthy winners, with Liverpool not quite at their best.
However, it remains to be seen if this result proves pivotal in the race for the Premier League title.
