They came within 10 minutes of blowing it, but Liverpool wrestled back a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a dramatic late win at Southampton on Friday night.

The Reds went behind in the ninth minute when Shane Long scored his customary goal for the season, thus bringing up a historic milestone for Liverpool…

Naby Keita then equalised before half-time with his first goal for Liverpool, heading in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deep cross at the far post.

Jurgen Klopp’s team maintained a decent head of steam but as the match moved toward the last ten minutes, it looked like the Saints were about to put a sizeable dint in their opponents’ title aspirations.

Then, as the clock ticked over into the 81st minute, Mohamed Salah went and did this…

Suddenly, the pressure was released and Liverpool swiftly added a third goal to finish things off in the 86th minute.

After working his way to the byline, Roberto Firmino slung a low pass across the face of the Southampton goal which was emphatically rammed home by a gallumping Jordan Henderson…

At the sound of the final whistle, Liverpool hopped back atop Man City in the title stakes, with two points separating the sparring clubs.

City are due to play Brighton & Hove Albion in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday and won’t play in the league again until next Sunday (14th April) due to a midweek Champions League quarter-final date with Tottenham.

It’s all go, but Klopp’s high-energy ransackers will be sitting pretty at the top of the shop for a full week at the very least.
